Enjoy the Park with Respect

Collserola is a Natural Park, not an urban park. That means that it is an area where nature is wild, with its own ecological balance, that is to say, a vital territory for animals and plants that live there, as well as for us.
It is everyone’s responsibility to take care of it, those who visit from time to time as much as those who live nearby. By respecting the rules, we will improve coexistence and guarantee the conservation of habitats. The future of the park is in our hands!

You look after the Park when ...

  • You come by public transport as the first option. If you come by private vehicle, drive carefully and don’t park on the verges of fields or on vegetation.
  • You avoid unnecessary noise and shouting, so that everyone can enjoy the Park’s tranquillity.
  • You take away any refuse you’ve produced, aware of the difficulty involved in emptying rubbish bins in the middle of the Park.
  • You respect the properties, farmhouses, churches and elements of heritage.
  • You don’t release exotic species that may alter the Park’s ecosystems, and refrain from feeding the wild boar, as it leads to their domestication.

It is essential you respect the rules of good citizenship in the Nature Park!

Rules and recommendations

  • Come by public transport.
  • Don’t stray from the indicated footpaths or take shortcuts.
  • Don’t feed the animals.
  • Avoid disturbing the animals and keep your dog on a lead.
  • Observe the plants without damaging them.
  • Collect your rubbish.

  • Respect agricultural land.
  • Avoid shouting and making loud noises.
  • Lighting fires or barbecues outside the specially designated spaces is prohibited.
  • Remember, it is forbidden to ride a bicycle or horse on the footpaths.
  • If you come by bicycle, use the cycle network map, give way to pedestrians and remember the speed limit is 20 km/h.
  • If you organise a group activity, you must obtain prior authorisation.

If you come by bicycle

In Collserola you will find a cycling network of more than 250 km. We invite you to discover and enjoy this natural space in a manner which is civil and compatible with the conservation of the Park.

Rules

You may only use the Park Cycle Path Network. (3-meter-wide paths and tracks)
The speed limit is 20 km/h
You may not ride on footpaths. Downhill bikes are prohibited
Racing is forbidden

Recommendations

When safety conditions cannot be maintained, get off the bike and proceed on foot.
Ride with caution, giving way to other users; remember, others do not always hear or see you coming.
Leave a safe distance when you pass users who are on foot. Avoid scares, and brake when you meet pedestrians.
Use of a helmet is compulsory for cyclists up to 16 years old, and highly recommended for those over 16.
Avoid commotions, especially if you are riding in a group, both for the good of the fauna and for that of the other users who wish to enjoy the peace and quiet of nature.

You can find these rules at Ordenances del Parc; they are supported by a penalty system, approved by the Park’s governing bodies.

Habitats

The natural splendour of Collserola is not only formed by its woodlands. Quite the contrary; it is the complex, dynamic mosaic of natural environments – forest, scrubland, thickets, grasslands, cropland and so on – that accentuates the huge natural value of the Serra. Biological diversity is an expression of the extent of organisation and structural complexity of ecosystems. Consequently, a high degree of diversity is the guarantee of greater ecological maturity and stability. In Mediterranean landscapes like Collserola, environmental heterogeneity ensures the greatest amount of biodiversity.

A first approach to the different Collserola habitats classifies them into the natural environments described below. These are followed by a more detailed classification based on the EU-approved CORINE Biotopes Manual.

This project was carried out by the Grup de Geobotànica i Cartografia de la Vegetació (GEOVEG) of the Universitat de Barcelona, commissioned by Barcelona Provincial Council (Diputació) and Barcelona City Council in the framework of studies related to drafting of the new Special Plan for the Serra de Collserola Natural Park. The fieldwork was carried out in 2012 and the scale used for detailing vegetation classification units is 1:10,000.

Through this page you can download and view the project report, the maps in PDF format and the metadata associated with each of the cartographic products.

Farming and Livestock Plan

Agricultural areas are part of the mosaic of the landscape and play an important role in various ways: they generate income, they contribute to passive forest fire prevention, and they create and maintain a diversity of habitats and hence plant and animal species.

The overall aim of the Farming and Livestock Plan is to promote the revival of agricultural and animal husbandry practices and operations, as well as their growth in a prudent manner that is compatible with the protection of the natural space and which helps to preserve the landscape and environmental quality of the park.

The plan establishes the guidelines for co-ordinating the strategy for farming and livestock in this supramunicipal territory while respecting the conditions of the context and the outstanding physical and environmental characteristics of the Collserola mountains. This will make it possible to arrive at a suitable approach in order to eradicate marginality and to foster economically viable and environmentally sustainable agriculture that is integrated into the landscape and the natural surroundings.

Farming and livestock management in the Collserola Natural Park is focused on the following areas of work:

Consolidating surface area

Consolidating the amount of land given over to farming, preventing fields from being abandoned and bringing back into use former fields that are now uncultivated.

Organic agriculture

Pointing farmers towards agricultural methods that safeguard the environment and, ultimately, to organic agriculture.

Improvements

Improving vegetable garden and orchard areas.

Grazing

Boosting controlled grazing.

Livestock operations

Providing the support required to ensure livestock operations are properly run and to point them towards organic farming methods.

Marketing

Promoting a marketing and awareness-raising network. PRODUCT OF COLLSEROLA seal of quality.

Local varieties

Encouraging the revival of traditional varieties and local breeds.

Stone shacks

Cataloguing the stone shacks, drovers’ paths and other related elements in order to safeguard the traditional agricultural heritage.

Promotion of the agro-ecological transition in the Park

The project “Promotion of the Agroecological Transition in Collserola” aims to:

  • Promote fair and sustainable local food systems
  • The reactivation of agricultural activity in the area of influence of the Serra de Collserola Natural Park.
